Laser Dentistry

Some of the most common problems we treat with laser dentistry

Lasers have been used in dentistry for decades with proven track record. In our practice, Laser Dentistry is an integral part of the everyday care we provide for our patients.

In general, there are two types of lasers used for laser dentistry: soft tissue lasers and hard tissue lasers. In Adelaide Cosmetic Dentistry, we utilise both. There are many situations in dentistry where lasers are very useful.

Sensitive teeth:

Cold or even hot and cold tooth sensitivity can be treated very successfully with lasers. Instant results are produced with short (90 seconds) application of laser to affected tooth. The results are very rewarding for both the dentist and patient. Needless to say, each case must be assessed individually. Sometimes tooth sensitivity is a sign of more complicated problems and may need further treatment.

Puffy gums:

Excessive growth of gum tissue due to gingivitis, hormonal changes or other factors can be treated with lasers. Removal of excessive gum aids the patients is their home care and helps them on the way to recovery.

Tongue ties or tight frenums:

Frenum is the flap of skin you feel under your top lip in between your front teeth. If too thick and tight it can cause gaps between teeth. Often a procedure called, "frenectomy" is necessary before starting orthodontic treatment. Tongue ties can interfere with speech and breastfeeding in infants. Performing a frenectomy or treating a tongue tie with a laser, means no scalpel blades, minimum pain and bleeding and faster recovery.

Loose teeth:

We have had some brilliant results treating loose teeth and large pockets around teeth with lasers. The laser removes the dead tissues around the loose teeth and promotes attachment of gum to the tooth. Every case needs to be treated individually and referral to gum specialist may be necessary in severe cases.

Cold sores and other skin lesions:

Our soft tissue laser can accelerate healing of cold sores and mouth ulcers. Also, we have treated issues like skin tags and small fat deposits on skin effortlessly. For large lesions around the lips and face, we refer patients to our plastic surgeon colleagues who consult on the same floor.

Treatment of dental disease:

Hard tissue lasers can be used for removal of decay and preparation of cavities for fillings. Though this is a rather time taking method of doing fillings, in some instances it can be beneficial.

Other uses of lasers include root canal treatment, tooth whitening, gum lifts and gum reshaping, crown lengthening, minor surgeries, biopsies and more.
